Senior Education

Fall 2018


All fall classes, workshops and events will be held at Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive. Register at townoffarragut.org/register, in person at Town Hall or by phone (218-3375). Payment is due at the time of registration. All credit card payments will incur a transaction fee. Cash and check payments are also accepted when registering in person. No refunds are given. The Town of Farragut is not responsible for costs associated with the purchase of supplies when a class is canceled.

iPad/iPhone Basics for Seniors Session I (two-day class)

Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 17 – 18, 10 AM – 12 PM. Registration and payment deadline: Monday, Oct. 15. Cost: $45. Must be 55 or older to attend. Must bring own device. Classes limited to five participants so register early!

AARP Smart Driving Program

Friday, Dec. 7, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Cost: $15 for AARP members; $20 for non-AARP members. Bring a check to the class. Registration deadline: Monday, Dec. 4. Participants must bring their AARP membership card or their membership number to the class to receive the $5 discount. Membership numbers can be obtained by calling 1-888-687-2277. Participants must be 55 years of age or older and complete eight hours of class time to be eligible for a discount (up to 10%) on their auto insurance. The program, which is taught by trained AARP volunteers, is designed to cover such topics as age-related physical changes and declining perceptual skills and to serve as a refresher course for the rules of the road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements. Participants should bring a lunch.

Taught by Karen McKinney, Zumba is a cardio-based workout with a Latin flavor designed to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.

Beginning and Continuing Taoist Tai Chi Classes

Taoist Tai Chi® arts are a powerful system for cultivation of body, mind and spirit to help practitioners return to a natural way of living. The practice contributes to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, improved circulation, calmness and peace of mind.     • Cost: free

    Children ages 12 and under and in costume are invited to “trick or treat” on the walk trail while local businesses, community groups and Town of Farragut volunteers hand out treats and provide games with prizes and cookie decorating. Participants are asked to bring items to benefit the local Ronald McDonald House. Visit townoffarragut.org/communityevents for a list of needed items.

    Light the Park

    • Kickoff event: 5:30 – 7:00 PM, Monday, Nov. 27, at Founders Park at Campbell Station
    • Lights come on at dusk every evening, except Dec. 25, through Monday, Jan. 1
    • Cost: free.

    During the kickoff, sponsored by Shop Farragut, parking is available across the street from the park, courtesy of Westgate Christian Fellowship. Welcome the holiday season with refreshments, entertainment and the flipping of a giant switch that turns on tens of thousands of lights throughout the park. A special guest in red will also make an appearance.

    Veteran’s Reception and A Day of Infamy Presentation

    • Monday, Dec. 4. Reception: 6 PM; Presentation: 7 PM
    • Cost: Free – no registration required.

    Local veterans are invited to a reception to view Farragut Museum exhibits and enjoy light refreshments. Frank Galbraith, retired Farragut Middle School history teacher, will present The Day of Infamy in the Town Hall Board Room. He will discuss the events leading up to WWII, including the end of WWI, the roaring ’20s, organized crime, the Great Depression, Hitler coming to power and the attack on Pearl Harbor. WWII veterans have a special invitation to attend and answer questions.

    Celebrate the Season

    • Cost: free.

    Town Hall is adorned in holiday splendor for this annual event, which has become a tradition for many families. Activities include cookie decorating, crafts, Farragut Museum tours and entertainment. Photos with Santa are available 4:30 to 6 p.m.
