Preserving History in East Tennessee

The Farragut Folklife Museum is a treasure chest of artifacts and photographs, which tell the history of the Farragut and Concord communities. One of the highlights of the museum is the collection found in the Admiral David Glasgow Farragut Gallery. Admiral Farragut was born in this area on July 5, 1801.  Farragut was the first commissioned admiral of the United States Navy and best known for his statement, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead." This nationally sought after collection houses artifacts such as Farragut's personal china, uniform ornamentation, family photographs, manuscripts, letters of interest and a large collection of scrimshaw. 

The museum also exhibits objects of memorabilia including the history of local schools, churches, the Farragut and Concord communities and the Civil War in the Doris Woods Owens Gallery. The Bill Dunlap Gallery is home to new exhibits of interest to the community which are changed three to four times per year. 

A volunteer committee leads a dedicated group of museum docents and gift shop hosts and assists the professional museum coordinator with fundraising, exhibits and docent staffing. In addition, the museum committee arranges special events throughout the year. 

The Frances L. Abel Gift Shop features a variety of unique items, many which reflect the nature of the museum. Also available in the gift shop are Farragut flags and gift items; local and Civil War history books; a variety of children's toys; and handmade items from local crafts persons, including beaded jewelry and pottery.

The Farragut Folklife Museum and Gift Shop are located in the Farragut Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive. Admission to the museum is free - hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Those interested in arranging a group tour or becoming a museum docent or gift shop host should call (865) 966-7057.
